This album cover is from Before these Crowded Streets by Dave Matthews Band. The picture was taken in New York City near the Empire State building, and the coffee rings were taken from an actual napkin. I think the cover can be easily understood once you listen to the songs on the album, but a lot can be deduced from just the image and text itself. “Before These Crowded Streets” is obviously clueing you in about a time long gone, where things were simpler and before technology and people amassed. One song in particular, The Dreaming Tree, tells this story and contains the words “before these crowded streets.” I think that the visual and text is contradictory, but it’s to illustrate that the songs on this album are about something we can no longer capture a picture of – a time that has passed a while ago.
